How do I get a Michigan business tax ID number?

Register through Michigan Treasury Online at mto.treasury.michigan.gov. This is the state’s portal for business tax registration, and it gives you the ID number you need for sales tax, withholding, and unemployment insurance.

This is different from your federal EIN. The Employer Identification Number comes from the IRS and identifies your business for federal taxes. Michigan’s business tax ID is a separate registration that identifies you for state obligations. Most businesses operating in Michigan need both numbers.

You need a Michigan tax ID if you’re selling taxable goods or services, paying employees, or hiring workers. Sales tax collection requires registration. So does withholding state income tax from employee paychecks. If you’re hiring, you also need to register for unemployment insurance through Michigan’s UIA separately from Treasury.

To register, create an account on Michigan Treasury Online first. Have your federal EIN ready if you have one, along with your business formation documents and owner identification information. The system walks you through selecting which taxes apply to your business based on your answers.

Registration is free and usually processes within a few business days. You’ll receive your account number electronically, and you can log back into the portal to view it. Keep this number accessible because you’ll use it every time you file returns or make payments to the state.

Common mistakes include applying for the wrong tax types, entering incorrect business information, or forgetting to update your registration when circumstances change. If you later start selling products or hire your first employee, you need to go back and add those tax types to your existing registration.

Once you’re registered for withholding, you’ll need to actually set up payroll processing correctly to calculate and remit those taxes on schedule. Getting the tax ID is just the first step. Filing and paying on time every quarter is where many small businesses run into trouble.

If you’re not sure which taxes apply to your situation or how to handle ongoing compliance, a Detroit medical billing service or bookkeeping provider familiar with Michigan requirements can help you get set up correctly from the start.
